Compulsive behaviors and addictions of any kind, can lead to unmanageability in a person's life and in families, where the behaviors of the addict are affecting the entire family. Compulsive behaviors and addictions affect professional can undermine professional, academic, social, personal, and familial structures and responsibilities.

An addiction is any compulsive behavior, thought process, and psychobiological process, that cannot be stopped by sheer will, and that leads to unmanageability in one's life. Compulsive behaviors are rooted in attachment wounds, and are activated by unresolved shame and pain.
